Carry-On

We have divided the products on our site into carry-on and non carry-on categories. However, these categories should not be considered absolute. Carry-on requirements vary according to the airline.

You should check with your airline first, but most US domestic airlines permit a carry-on piece of luggage that is 45 linear (total) inches. A common sized bag for carry-on luggage is 22"x 14"x 9". Most airlines have a carry-on weight limit of 40 pounds.

You are also permitted to carry on an additional personal item, such as a purse or briefcase. The personal items must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you.

International airlines may have different restrictions for carry-on luggage. Again, it is always best to check with your airline first to get their exact requirements.

Airlines enforce all size and weight limits much more strictly now than in the past. Bags are weighed at check-in and many airlines have placed bag sizers at their gates. If your carry-on bags are too big, you will have to check them. This might cause them to be classified as "extra bags" which usually carries an extra charge.

The chart below contains examples of both domestic and international airlines with their carry-on size and weight restrictions and is intended only as a reference point.

Checked Baggage

Airline requirements also vary for checked baggage, but generally speaking, checked bags should weight less than 50lbs. Most airlines charge extra for all checked bags, even the first one. Make sure to check with the airline you’re flying for specifics. Below you’ll find information that was valid as of January 2011.

Also note bags over 62" refers to the cumulative inches of the bag. A bag with dimensions 32"x21"x10" is considered an oversized bag at 63" inches. Please note that all checked bags should only be locked with a TSA approved lock. All locking luggage sold on this site uses TSA locks. If you use a non TSA lock you will risk having your lock cut off. The TSA locks can only be opened by you and the TSA agent with the special key. If you are checking a bag, feel free to use the chart below as a guide, but please confirm with the airline directly as this information may have changed. Return to top

What size luggage is right for you?

18-20"

These are considered the International carry-on sizes, as they are allowed as a carry-on for most International flights. They are ideal for trips of 1-2 days, as they have packing space for a few outfits, a pair of shoes, and toiletries.

21-22"

These are the most popular sizes of carry-on luggage for U.S. domestic flights. Most U.S. airlines have carry on restrictions of 22" x 14"x 9", or 45 linear inches. These are the ideal sizes for business travelers or weekend trips, and some have a foldout or removable garment sleeve that can hold one suit or dress and has sufficient packing space for a few outfits, a couple pairs of shoes, and toiletries. Most also have an expansion feature, which allows an additional 2 to 4 inches of packing capacity, but when expanded these sizes may exceed the carry on restrictions and would have to be checked.

23- 24"

These sizes are popular for travelers looking for a smaller, lighter option of luggage to check. These pieces are too large to carry onto the plane, but are perfect for trips of 3 to 5 days. There is room for 2 to 3 outfits, a couple pair of shoes, and toiletry kits. The suiter (a fold out or removable garment sleeve) has space for up to 2 suits or dresses.

25-27"

These sizes are the most popular size of luggage to check. They are ideal for trips of 5 to 7 days, or longer, depending on how you pack. They have a large capacity for multiple outfits, shoes, and toiletries. The suiter (a fold out or removable garment sleeve) can hold two thick wool suits and up to four dresses. These are the best option for luggage to check, they have lots of room to pack but you won't break your back trying to move it.

28-32"

These are very large suitcases meant for trips exceeding a week. They have a tremendous capacity for anything you would like to travel with. Due to their large size, when fully packed they can be difficult to maneuver and may exceed the 50 lbs. weight restrictions that most U.S. airlines enforce. Along with the weight restrictions, most U.S. airlines have a size restriction of 62" linear inches and these sizes may exceed that size, especially when expanded. But if you know you need the biggest piece of luggage available, these would be for you. Be sure to pay attention to the weight of the luggage. A lighter piece of luggage, like the Rimowa Salsa Air series, will be able to pack more before reaching that 50 lb limit.  Return to top

Who is Rimowa?

Rimowa is a German luggage company founded in 1898. For more than a century they have been leading the way in luggage innovation. While nylon soft luggage is common in the United States, more and more travelers are discovering the benefits of luggage with a hard, indestructible shell for protecting their belongings. Much of this realizations stems from Rimowa’s long lasting standards for making their luggage strong, yet light weight. The patented polycarbonate shell of many of their luggage lines has not been replicated to be as light or as solid by any other manufacturers.

Rimowa says of themselves:

The first case was produced in the year 1898 – in the case factory in Cologne. At the time, the name of the company was Kofferfabrik Paul Morszeck. At the turn of the century, the cases were made of wood but the Cologne factory is already creating a great story with a design that is as lightweight as possible. Within a few years, Rimowa’s large wardrobe and steamer trunks have become the representative travel companions of high society. In the 1920s discerning globetrotters are delighted by the elegant cases produced by the company. In 1937, Richard Morszeck, the son of the company founder, brings the first steamer trunk made of lightweight metal onto the market. This is only the first of numerous brilliant innovative ideas upon which the global success of Rimowa is based. The brand name RIMOWA was derived from Richard Morszeck (Richard Morszeck Warenzeichen). In 1950, the first case was made from aluminium with the typical contour structure that has since made Rimowa products unmistakable. The great thing: The design combines minimum weight with maximum stability. Among the international jet set the contour cases quickly attain the status of cult objects.
